The Unsung
Heroes
At the heart of Rally NZ is a passionate, dedicated community of volunteers who make everything we do possible. From stage crews and safety teams to admin support and zero car crews, every single person plays a vital role — and we’re so incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and heart they bring to the sport. Naturally, with such a diverse group, there are some truly amazing stories behind the hi-vis vests, and through Volunteer Voices, we’re shining a light on the unsung heroes and their stories.
Murray O’Donnell (AKA Mojo)
Driver of the 00 Zero Car
It’s hard to imagine Rally New Zealand without Murray O’Donnell — or as we all know him, Mojo. Mojo’s been a cornerstone of our rally community for more than 50 years, and while he’s not one to make a fuss, the impact he’s had on the sport — and the people in it — is incredible.
David Hargreaves (AKA Davey)
Co-Driver of the 00 Zero Car
If you’ve been around Rally New Zealand for any length of time, chances are you’ve crossed paths with David “Davey” Hargreaves. He’s not the kind to seek the spotlight — but trust me, he’s more than earned it.
Brian Lineham
Timing Crew Post Chief
Within Rally NZ and the wider motorsport world, there are a few names that will come to mind when you think of the most committed volunteers ever, and one of those names is Brian Lineham and his family; Debbie (wife), Michelle, Emma (daughters), and Michael (grandson). With 27 years of volunteering for RNZ in his pocket, and 54 years within the wider motorsport community Brian really is at the heart and soul of our volunteer family.
Blair Bartels
NZRC Coordinator
For those of you who have been around Rallying for more than a few events – you are bound to have ran into the man, the myth, the legend himself Mr BB.
Notorious for cracking a crude joke, sinking some bourbons at the after party, and not taking life too seriously, BB is one of the key members of the NZRC team – all of whom deserve their moment in the spotlight; because I tell you now, these guys dedicate more time, energy and effort into our sport every single year than even fathomable.
Jess Waugh
Timing Management Team
When I first got into Rallying, Jess was one of the first to take me under her wing and spread her contagious addiction to our sport. But even more-so, she looked out for the blonde, ditz that I am, just like she has done for countless people in our humble little community. If you ever need a hug, she’s there, if you’ve forgotten any supplies – guaranteed she’s over packed them, or if you just need a helping hand, she’ll drop what she’s doing to help a friend out. As a mum to three amazing girls, and adoptive mum to the Timing Dept, Jess really has earnt the name as ‘Rally Mum’.
Keith Williams
Rally NZ CRO
Keith Williams has been a staple of the RNZ team for longer than I’ve been on the planet! Whether its out and about delivering resident letters, helping in the documentation/secretariat room or being a part of our legendary CRO crew, Keith will always be there with a smile on his face, a willingness to ensure the job is done to the best of its ability and a joke in reserve just to keep you on your toes.
Michael Howe
Zero Car Team – Co-Driver
Michael is a new edition to the zero-car crew, beginning his volunteering adventure in reverse, starting as a flag marshal at Pukekohe (RIP) and Hampton Downs respectively. Eventually though, we managed to convince Michael to jump over and give rallying a go where he joined the Zero Car team for Whangarei and WRC events, quickly learning and becoming a strong and valued member of the team.
Sarah Mann
Timing Dept Post Chief
For Sarah, the biggest thing that keeps her coming back to volunteer each year isn’t as much the cars, but more the people. “I love the community. I’ve met so many amazing people and I’m part of such a great group of volunteers.”
All-round, Sarah is a great example of the next generation of volunteers coming through, and we’re lucky to have her as part of the team. Thank you Sarah for everything you do – your dedication, energy, and passion goes a very long way, and we’re so glad to have you in the Rally NZ family!

PARTNERSHIPS
With each leg of the NZ Rally Championship hosted by local car clubs, we as a volunteer body are there to provide extra manpower and support as and when needed. We also provide organisational support if required, with many of our volunteers belonging to more than one car club.
The Rally NZ Club takes pride in working closely with the NZRC – and enjoys providing our volunteers the opportunity to travel across the country to various motorsport events, getting to do what they love in new and exciting environments.
We are also the first point of call for large-scale international events, including the International Rally of Whangarei and the World Rally Championship.
