Heroes
At the heart of Rally NZ is a passionate, dedicated community of volunteers who make everything we do possible. From stage crews and safety teams to admin support and zero car crews, every single person plays a vital role — and we’re so incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and heart they bring to the sport. Naturally, with such a diverse group, there are some truly amazing stories behind the hi-vis vests, and through Volunteer Voices, we’re shining a light on the unsung heroes and their stories.
Within Rally New Zealand and the wider motorsport world, there are a few names that will come to mind when you think of the most committed volunteers ever, and one of those names is Brian Lineham and his family; Debbie (wife), Michelle, Emma (daughters), and Michael (grandson).
With 27 years of volunteering for RNZ in his pocket, and 54 years within the wider motorsport community supporting local car clubs, speedway and stock cars, Brian really is at the heart and soul of our volunteer family.

And his commitment is second-to-none. For example, traveling overnight after attending a family gathering in Waihi, to make it in time for the Rally of Whangarei (ROW), arriving at Service Park at a crisp 2 AM. While in 2022, he was out on stage for the opening day of ROW despite having undergone chemotherapy just 24 hours earlier.
There really is nothing that can stop the Lineham’s from being at an event, with big smiles and friendly faces no matter what is going on in their personal lives. And it has certainly been no easy ride, however no matter what, they’re always finding the silver linings, remaining humble, caring and warm-hearted to everyone they encounter.
As a family man, when asked what his favourite Rally memory was, the first thought that came to mind for Brian was watching Peter Solberg with his son at the opening ceremony of the 2012 WRC during an intense scooter race being held for the kids. With starting lights, and a full timing setup, Brian cherishes the smiles, laughter and enjoyment had all round from the event with everyone getting stuck in.
So what is it that keeps the Lineham family coming back? When asked, the answer came easily – “the close friendships that we’ve made with all the drivers, co-drivers and volunteers, it really is like one big extended family with an incredible level of support shown over the years.” In particular, the Lineham’s truly appreciate the support everyone has shown during Brian’s battle with cancer, as well as everyone all coming together to help clear the Lineham’s house, providing accomodation and warm meals after an unfortunate house-fire that saw them relocated in 2023.

With more motorsport stories than an encyclopedia, and a warmth that touches everyone in RNZ, Brian and the Lineham’s have certainly left a long lasting impression on all who have had the pleasure of getting to know them.
And on a personal level, after having had the absolute pleasure of growing closer with the Lineham’s over the last few years, I can honestly say they are one of the most humble, caring and truly dedicated families I’ve ever met.
Their commitment to our sport is awe-inspiring, and I can only hope to be half the person and volunteer that Brian is.
I am hugely honoured, and privileged to get to call you family my friend, and I look forward to sharing many more Rallies with you all.

PARTNERSHIPS
With each leg of the NZ Rally Championship hosted by local car clubs, we as a volunteer body are there to provide extra manpower and support as and when needed. We also provide organisational support if required, with many of our volunteers belonging to more than one car club.
The Rally NZ Club takes pride in working closely with the NZRC – and enjoys providing our volunteers the opportunity to travel across the country to various motorsport events, getting to do what they love in new and exciting environments.
We are also the first point of call for large-scale international events, including the International Rally of Whangarei and the World Rally Championship.
